8th Alps-Adria Scientific Workshop

8th Alps-Adria Scientific Workshop
Biotic and abiotic stress
27th April – 2nd May 2009, Neum, Bosnia-Herczegovina

Subject of the scientific workshop:

Stress is an emotional and physical response to threats from the outside world. The term stress was first used by the endocrinologist  János Selye in the 1930’s to describe physiological responses. Selye later broadened and popularized the concept to include the perceptions and responses trying to adapt to the challenges of everyday life. In Selye's terminology, "stress" refers to the reaction of the organism, and "stressor" refers to the environmental threat. Stress in certain circumstances may be experienced positively. Eustress, for example, can be an adaptive response prompting the activation of internal resources to meet challenges and achieve goals.
Living organisms within an agro-ecological environment may be stressed by various stressors. Actually there are four possible kinds of stress. Stress may be biotic and abiotic according to its nature. Both can be generated by anthropogenic and environmental stressors. The aim of the scientific workshop is to open a forum for the discussion of research results related to stress in the field of agri-environments and the food chain.
