HAS's Membership

HAS's membership is comprised of full, corresponding, external, and honorary members.

Only citizens of the Hungarian Republic can be elected to become corresponding and full members of HAS.

At any one time, the number of HAS's corresponding and full members under the age of 70 must not exceed 200.

Doctors of HAS, or persons holding an equivalent degree as stipulated by Article 28 of the Academy Law of 1994, persons moreover who pursue their field of science on a particularly high and creative level recognised by their field of science, can be elected to become corresponding members.

Corresponding members can be elected to become full members only if they have produced some significant scientific achievements since they became corresponding members.

All domestic members of HAS belong to a certain scientific section and a certain scientific committee of that particular scientific section.

Citizens of foreign countries can be elected to become external or honorary members of HAS.

Scholars or scientists living in a foreign country, holding a foreign citizenship, yet professing themselves to be Hungarians, can be elected to become external members if they pursue their field of science on a particularly high and creative level recognised by their field of science, and if they keep in close touch with Hungarian scientific life.

Scholars or scientists active in a foreign country can be elected to become honorary members of HAS if they pursue their field of science on an internationally recognised level, and whose achievement is worthy of the special esteem of Hungarian scientific life.

External and honorary members are elected by their colleagues who are full or corresponding members of HAS.

The number of full HAS members is standing at 249 at present with an additional 92 corresponding members. Doctors of the Academy number appr. 2500 at the present time.

HAS’s overall share from Hungary’s central budget nears 120 million euros of which appr. 25 million go towards monthly remuneration for members and doctors, a sum eligible for income tax.

Owing largely to the intricacy of the selection process most full and corresponding members are over 60 by the time their title is conferred. At the present time their average age is 69,6 years. The average age of just full members is slightly higher, 72,9 years.
