A recent research conducted by the HAS-HNHM Animal Ecology Research Group on the co-existence of cuckoos and other bird species may result in our improved understanding of evolutionary models. A member of the team, Csaba Moskát’s publication on the topic has recently been referred to in a New York Times article.

Mathematician and member of HAS László Lovász has been awarded one of the most prestigious prizes for scientific and cultural achievements, the Kyoto Prize, also known informally as the Japanese Nobel-prize. The jury granted the award to Lovász for his creating connections among the various branches of mathematics and the impact his work had on other disciplines related to mathematics.

Commissioner for Atomic Energy in France Catherine Cesarsky and HAS’ President József Pálinkás together inaugurated the statue of Nobel-Laureate French physicist Frédéric Joliot-Curie erected near the atomic reactor of HAS’ Central Physics Research Institute. The President of the Academy emphasised the importance of today’s scientists preserving the intellectual heritage of Joliot-Curie.

One of the most prestigious chemical journals, Angewandte Chemie has recently accepted the publication of this year’s Momentum-winning chemist Tibor Soós and his colleagues as a „hot paper”. In their study the Hungarian experts detail a new process of catalyst development which could regulate chemical reactions utilizing environment-friendly materials.

The oldest, but still operating academy of the world, a most influential advisory board for British Governments, the Royal Society turns 350 this year. HAS’s President József Pálinkás participated in its ceremonial assembly and also met Hungarian scientists working at the University of Oxford during his stay.

During its meeting in Budapest on June 18-19 the EASAC Council agreed to prepare statements on such currently pressing topics as Synthetic Biology, on Infectious Diseases in Europe, on Concentrating Solar Power, on Carbon Capture and Storage, on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, on Sustainable Biofuels and on Adaptation to Climate Change. Furthermore, EASAC is running a series of workshops for its members about the Dialogue between Science and Policy, both on a national and on an EU level.
